Congratulations to Tara Mayer for receiving the 2018/2019 Killam Teaching Prize! The Killam Teaching Prize is awarded annually to faculty nominated by students, colleagues, and alumni in recognition of excellence in teaching.
As quoted by Eagle Glassheim, UBC History Department Head:
“Congratulations to History Instructor Tara Mayer for winning the Killam Teaching Prize for 2018/19! This prize recognizes her consistently strong teaching record, but also her distinctive contributions to pedagogy using material and visual sources. These include her course bringing students into collaboration with the Museum of Vancouver to engage the Museum’s sizable, but under-utilized, collection of South Asian images and material artifacts. Prof. Mayer’s student nominators also highlighted her incredible capacity to bring a wide range of students into serious and respectful conversation about often difficult historical topics. In a collaboration with colleagues from the Faculty of Education, Prof. Mayer has explored the challenges and opportunities of teaching “difficult knowledge” such as the violent 1947 Partition of India. Please join us in congratulating Prof. Mayer, and thanking her for her considerable contributions in teaching, mentoring, and pedagogical innovation.”
