HIST-333C-2023W-001

This course offers third-year History honours students an introduction to the craft of historical research and writing. We will examine key debates in historical scholarship and discuss the processes through which historical evidence and data can enter and develop digital, textual, and material archives. Our goal is to critically engage these debates and understand how methodological and theoretical approaches to historical evidence, in their various forms, continue to change over time. We will consider how scholars have assembled, interpreted, and re-interpreted the past, and for whom. You will acquire practical training in the skills required to evaluate various genres of historical writing, to interpret sources, and to engage first-hand in practices of writing in the discipline of History. These conversations are designed to inspire your own honours thesis project as you cultivate your own scholarly voice and learn to engage academic debates based on research. Finally, this course provides support to history honours students by fostering a sense of scholarly and social community.
